Code of Conduct

We want our dance community to be a fun, welcoming, safe environment. By attending an event or class of ours, you agree to abide by the code below.

Spotsy Westies

Be Respectful:

Everyone is welcome at our events, and everyone should feel welcome. Please be sure to treat everyone with respect. It’s best not to assume that anyone is OK with you holding them very close or doing dips, so it’s a good idea to ask them in advance. Being respectful also means doing your best to avoid language or actions that someone else might find offensive, whether it’s related to their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual preference, age, appearance, dance ability, or anything else. Please treat everyone else as you would like to be treated.

Be Kind:

Usually, people will say yes when someone asks them to dance… but not always. You have the right to turn down a dance without giving a reason, and if someone turns you down, please accept their choice and simply ask someone else. You also have the right to ask for adjustments during a dance or to end the dance without finishing the song without explanation. You should accept someone else’s choice to do that, too. If you hurt someone, please apologize. If someone hurts you or makes you uncomfortable, it was probably not intentional, so please try to let them know in a kind way. Otherwise, in general, please avoid giving anyone advice on their dancing or trying to teach them on the social dance floor, unless they specifically ask for that type of feedback.

Report Problems:

If someone acts inappropriately toward you, please let one of us know discreetly, and we will be discreet about our response. Similarly, if you think you see someone in an uncomfortable situation, try to ask them whether they are OK in a safe, discreet way, and if they are not OK, please let one of us know.

If You Behave Inappropriately:

… there may be consequences. We will not tolerate threats or harassment of any kind, and if you behave inappropriately, we may talk to you about it, and we may ask you to leave.

It’s easy to be respectful and kind, and behaving in such a way toward everyone helps make our dance community fun, warm, and welcoming! Thank you!

“There are shortcuts to happiness, and dancing is one of them.”

– Vicki Baum
